Dragonflies and Sparkly Eyes

I finished this little guy today...I'm pretty happy with the colors and patterns...and I'm especially happy about the eyes and face on this one! More painting next week. -Julia

About the project

The carousel at Stewart Park, in Ithaca NY, was installed in its current location in 1951. It was made by the Herschell Spillman Company, in North Tonawanda, NY, and was designed to be a portable carnival merry-go-round. Generations of Ithacans and their children have enjoyed riding these horses by the summer lakeshore. Last painted in 1986, the carousel is in need of freshening up. Local artists and Ithaca natives Christi Sobel and Julia John are teaming up to re-paint the carousel, one horse at a time, starting in the summer of 2014.

Julia John grew up in Ithaca and is a sophomore art student at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has fond memories of picnics in Stewart Park and riding the carousel as a child. Home for the summer, she is excited to be working on a project that will make the horses' magic shine as bright as it should.

Christi Sobel is a freelance artist, scientific illustrator and member of the Ithaca Farmers' Market. She is pleased to have a big fun project that will give something back to the community which has supported her as an artist.
